Monday, April 1st, 1968 - One of America's most beloved television programs comes to an end as CBS airs its 249th and final episode of "The Andy Griffith Show", which premiered on October 3rd, 1960.

 

Tuesday, April 2nd, 1968 - Anti-war presidential candidate Senator Eugene McCarthy (D-Minn.) wins the Wisconsin Democratic Presidential Primary with 57.6% of the vote.

 

Wednesday, April 3rd, 1968 - Stanley Kubrick's futuristic film classic "2001: A Space Odyssey" is released by MGM Studios.

 

Thursday, April 4th, 1968 - Shortly after 6:00pm civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (39) is fatally shot on the balcony outside his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

 

Friday, April 5th, 1968 - Rioting and racial violence following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. begins to escalate in over 120 major cities across the country. During the next week 46 deaths will result from the rioting.

 

Saturday, April 6th, 1968 - Gunpowder stock at a sporting goods store in Richmond, Indiana is accidentally ignited. The explosion kills 43 people, injures 150 others, and destroys several buildings adjacent to the store.

 

Sunday, April 7th, 1968 - World champion Formula One racecar driver Jim Clark (32) is killed when his Ford Lotus goes out of control at about 175mph on a race track in Hockenheim, West Germany.
