Monday, April 15th, 1968 - The longest scoreless baseball game in major league history is played at the Houston Astrodome between the Houston Astros and the New York Mets. Six hours and six minutes into the game, the Astros finally score in the 24th inning to beat the Mets 1-0.

 

Tuesday, April 16th, 1968 - Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edna Ferber dies of cancer at the age of 82 at her home in New York City.

 

Wednesday, April 17th, 1968 - In Durham, North Carolina, about one-third of Duke University's student body demonstrates to protest racial discrimination in the hiring of non-academic staff.

 

Thursday, April 18th, 1968 - John Lennon and George Harrison of The Beatles leave Rishikesh, India, ending their two-month seclusion with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr had already left, and all four would eventually renounce the Maharishi.

 

Friday, April 19th, 1968 - Ambrose Burfoot of Groton, Connecticut wins the 71st Annual Boston Marathon in a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 17 seconds.

 

Saturday, April 20th, 1968 - Pierre Trudeau (48) is sworn in as Canada's 15th Prime Minister, succeeding Lester B. Pearson.

 

Sunday, April 21st, 1968 - Following intense international pressure, the executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) votes to bar South Africa from participating in the summer Olympic games.
