Monday, April 22nd, 1968 - CBS television airs a special called "The Beat of the Brass", a musical trip around the U.S. with Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

 

Tuesday, April 23rd, 1968 - Led by political activist Mark Rudd, students at Columbia University in New York begin an 8-day occupation of five campus buildings to protest Univesity ties to the defense department and construction of a gymnasium in nearby Morningside Park. The occupation shuts down the University until, on April 30th, the NYPD forcibly remove all the students.

 

Wednesday, April 24th, 1968 - Nine West African nations form a West African Regional Group to promote economic unification in the area.

 

Thursday, April 25th, 1968 - The Beatles refuse to perform for the Queen of England at a British Olympic Appeal Fund show. Ringo Starr explains, "Our decision would be the same no matter what the cause. We don't do benefits."

 

Friday, April 26th, 1968 - Despite protests, the U.S. government sets off the biggest nuclear blast ever detonated in the U.S. at an underground testing site in Nevada.

 

Saturday, April 27th, 1968 - Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey formally announces his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination, and he draws ridicule for vowing to base his campaign on "a politics of joy".

 

Sunday, April 28th, 1968 - In an unusual piece of performance art, Larry Van Over drops acid and then climbs into a helicopter and guides the hired pilot to drop a 500-pound upright piano from an altitude of 150 feet onto Larry's farm in Duvall, Washington. About 3,000 spectators gather to watch (and hear) the event.

 

Monday, April 29th, 1968 - The rock musical "Hair" opens on Broadway at the Biltmore Theater in New York.

 

Tuesday, April 30th, 1968 - New York's Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who, on March 21st declared he would not enter the presidential race, announces that he will, afterall, be a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.
