Tuesday, April 9th, 1968 - United Artists releases Blake Edward's comedy film "The Party" starring Peter Sellers.

 

Wednesday, April 10th, 1968 - The 40th annual Academy Awards are presented at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica. Hosted by Bob Hope, and honoring film achievements for 1967, the Oscar for Best Picture goes to "In the Heat of the Night". Best Actress: Katherine Hepburn for "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", Best Actor: Rod Steiger for "In the Heat of the Night", Best Supporting Actress: Estelle Parsons for "Bonnie and Clyde", Best Supporting Actor: George Kennedy for "Cool Hand Luke", and Best Director: Mike Nichols for "The Graduate".

 

Thursday, April 11th, 1968 - One week after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., President Lyndon Johnson signs into law the Civil Rights Act of 1968, making racial discrimination in selling or renting housing illegal.

 

Friday, April 12th, 1968 - Nerve gas released during a chemical weapons test at a US Army testing facility in Dugway, Utah, kills over 4,000 sheep on the nearby Skull Valley Indian Reservation.

 

Saturday, April 13th, 1968 - West German Chancellor Kurt Kiesinger goes on nationwide TV to warn of tougher police measures against demonstrations by left-wing youths who are protesting the attempted assassination of student leader Rudi Dutschke (aka "Rudi the Red") on April 11th.

 

Sunday, April 14th, 1968 - On Easter Sunday golfer Bob Goalby (36) wins the 32nd annual Masters Invitational Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
