Thursday, August 1st, 1968 - President Lyndon Johnson signs into law the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Act of 1968, which authorizes $5.3 billion for a three-year plan to provide 1.7 million housing units for low-income families.

 

Friday, August 2nd, 1968 - Sirhan B. Sirhan enters a plea of not guilty to the charge of first-degree murder in the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy on June 5th.

 

Saturday, August 3rd, 1968 - A summit meeting of leaders of the U.S.S.R., Czechoslovakia, and four other East European countries is held in Bratislavia, Czechoslovakia.

 

Sunday, August 4th, 1968 - At the Newport Pop Festival in Cost Mesa, California, the rock group Steppenwolf performs their song "Born To Be Wild" for the first time. It eventually becomes one of the great rock anthems of 1968.

 

Monday, August 5th, 1968 - The four-day Republican National Convention kicks off in Miami Beach, Florida, with opening speeches delivered by Barry Goldwater and former president Dwight D. Eisenhower.

 

Tuesday, August 6th, 1968 - The day after addressing the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach, Florida, former president Dwight D. Eisenhower suffers hist 6th heart attack. Seven months later, on March 28th, 1969, Eisenhower dies of congestive heart failure.

 

Wednesday, August 7th, 1968 - A week-long standoff between the U.S. government and the steel industry ends in a compromise under which steel prices would rise 2.5% instead of 5% as the industry wanted.
