Friday, August 16th, 1968 - Actress Mia Farrow (23) and her husband Frank Sinatra (52) are divorced in Juarez, Mexico. They were married on July 7th, 1966.

 

Saturday, August 17th, 1968 - Wrestling great Dick Beyer (a.k.a. "The Destroyer") beats Verne Gagne to become the new National Wrestling Alliance champion.

 

Sunday, August 18th, 1968 - Two Japanese sightseeing buses are swept by landslides into a rain-swollen river on the island of Honshu, killing 102.

 

Monday, August 19th, 1968 - Tom Wolfe's book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test", which chronicles the psychedlic adventures of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, is released.

 

Tuesday, August 20th, 1968 - The "Prague Spring" (a term refering to the recent liberalization of Czechoslovakia's Communist government, initiated by Czech leader Alexander Dubcek) is brought to an abrupt end as 250,000 Soviet and Warsaw Pact troops invade Czechoslovakia to reinstate hard-line Soviet rule. Mass public demonstrations against the invasion occur throughout the country over the next several days.

 

Wednesday, August 21st, 1968 - Private First Class James Anderson, Jr. becomes the first African-American U.S. Marine to be awarded the military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for heroism while serving in Vietnam.
