Thursday, August 22nd, 1968 - Cynthia Powell Lennon sues her husband John Lennon for divorce on the grounds of adultery after returning to her London home to find Yoko Ono living there.
Friday, August 23rd, 1968 - Pigasus, the pig that the Youth International Party (Yippies!) had advanced as their candidate for U.S. President, is "arrested" by Chicago police.
Saturday, August 24th, 1968 - Eleven- year-old Branch Lew, of Muncie, Indiana, beats out 243 other contestants to win the 31st Annual All-American Soap Box Derby championship in Akron, Ohio.
Sunday, August 25th, 1968 - 25-year-old tennis sensation Arthur Ashe defeats Bob Lutz to become the first African-American to win the U.S. Open Singles championship.
Monday, August 26th, 1968 - The four-day 1968 Democratic National Convention gets underway in Chicago. In his welcoming address, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says, "As long as I am mayor of this city, there's going to be law and order in Chicago".
Tuesday, August 27th, 1968 - As thousands of anti-war demonstrators gather in Chicago to protest the Democratic National Convention, mayor Richard Daley places the entire 11,900-man police force on 12-hour shifts and calls in an additional 5,600 National Guardsmen and 7,500 Army troopers. That evening Chicago police use clubs and tear gas to evict demonstrators from Lincoln Park.
Wednesday, August 28th, 1968 - As delegates inside the Democratic Convention Center in Chicago fight over the inclusion of a peace platform, thousands of anti-war demonstrators violently clash with Chicago police outside the Democratic Convention headquarters along Michigan Avenue. The riot is broadcast over national television as demonstrators chant "The whole world is watching!" 178 people are arrested and 140 injuries are reported.
Thursday, August 29th, 1968 - Following a night of turmoil in the streets of Chicago and in the Convention Hall, delegates to the Democratic National Convention elect vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey as its presidential cadidate, with Maine Senator Edmond Muskie as his running mate.
Friday, August 30th, 1968 - The Beatles release their biggest-selling hit single "Hey Jude", with "Revolution" on the flip side.
Saturday, August 31st, 1968 - An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale hits Iran killing 12,000 people. It is followed the next day by another quake killing and additional 10,000 people and leaving 100,000 homeless.
