Thursday, August 8th, 1968 - On the final evening of the Republican National Conveniton Richard Milhous Nixon (54) is formally nominated, and Nixon announces his selection of Maryland Governor Spiro Agnew as his running mate.
Friday, August 9th, 1968 - Chrysler introduces the Newport four-door sedan, which, with a starting price of $3,309, becomes its best selling car of 1968.
Saturday, August 10th, 1968 - Less than three weeks before the Democratic National Convention is set to open in Chicago, Senator George McGovern of South Dakota announces he plans to seek the Democratic presidential nomination.
Sunday, August 11th, 1968 - The last steam-powered passenger train service in Britain makes its final run, traveling a 120-mile route from Liverpool to Carlisle before returning to Liverpool to be dispatched to the wrecking yard.
Monday, August 12th, 1968 - Pieter J. Auld, the mayor of Rotterdam from 1945 to 1952, dies at the age of 81.
Tuesday, August 13th, 1968 - Greek poet and politician Alexandros Panagoulis attempts to assassinate Greek dictator Colonel George Papadopoulos in Varkiza, Athens.
Wednesday, August 14th, 1968 - A Los Angeles Airways helicopter crashes en route from Los Angeles to Disneyland, killing all 21 people on board. Less than three months earlier (see May 22nd) the same helicopter shuttle service crashed en route from Disneyland to Los Angeles, killing all 23 people on board.
