Thursday, February 15th, 1968 - The Monkees begin filming "HEAD", their only motion picture, which is released to mixed reviews on November 6th. The movie features cameos by Frank Zappa and Jack Nicholson.

 

Friday, February 16th, 1968 - America's 9-1-1 emergency phone system is introduced when the first-ever 9-1-1 call is placed (as a test, not an emergency) by Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite from the Haleyville, Alabama City Hall to U.S. Representative Tom Bevill at the city's police station.

 

Saturday, February 17th, 1968 - Janis Joplin and her band 'Big Brother & the Holding Company' perform their first New York City concert at Anderson Theater.

 

Sunday, February 18th, 1968 - David Gilmour joins Pink Floyd, replacing founder Syd Barrett, who checked himself into a psychiatric hospital.

 

Monday, February 19th, 1968 - The National Education Television Network begins broadcasting the classic children's program "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood".

 

Tuesday, February 20th, 1968 - Mississippi state troopers use tear gas and clubs to break up a student demonstration at Alcorn A & M (now Alcorn State University) in Lorman, Mississippi.

 

Wednesday, February 21st, 1968 - The Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C. is bombed by an explosive placed on a ground-floor office windowsill. There were no injuries resulting from the blast, and to this day the case remains unsolved.
