Monday, January 1st, 1968 - In one of his most well-publicized stunts, daredevil Evel Knievel crashes his motorcycle while attempting to jump the fountains of Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. The crash results in numerous broken bones and puts Evel in a coma lasting 29 days.

 

Tuesday, January 2nd, 1968 - Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding, Jr. is born in The Bronx, New York.

 

Wednesday, January 3rd, 1968 - Peace candidate Senator Eugene McCarthy (D. Minnesota) announces he will enter the New Hampshire presidential primary.

 

Thursday, Janurary 4th, 1968 - In Stockholm, Sweden guitar legend Jimi Hendrix is jailed after trashing a hotel during a drunken fist fight with bassist Noel Redding.

 

Friday, January 5th, 1968 - Renowned baby doctor Dr. Benjamin Spock is indicted by a Federal Grand Jury for conspiring to counsel young men to violate the U.S. draft laws.

 

Saturday, January 6th, 1968 - The first heart transplant in the U.S. (and the fourth in the world) is performed in California on 54-year-old patient Mike Kasperak, who dies 15 days later.

 

Sunday, January 7th, 1968 - The U.S. lunar probe "Surveyor 7" is launched from Cape Kennedy.
