Monday, January 22nd, 1968 - Atlantic Records releases the Aretha Franklin album "Lady Soul", which includes such chart-toppers as "Chain of Fools", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", and "Ain't No Way".
Tuesday, January 23rd, 1968 - The Navy intelligence ship USS "Pueblo" is captured in the Sea of Japan by four North Korean patrol boats. The 83 crew members are starved and tortured during their 11 months of captivity, and on December 23rd the 82 surviving crew members are released.
Wednesday, January 24th, 1968 - United Artists releases the western classic "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" starring Clint Eastwood.
Thursday, January 25th, 1968 - Bob Seagren of the Uviversity of South Carolina sets the indoor pole vault record of 17 feet, 4 & 1/4 inches.
Friday, January 26th, 1968 - The Israeli submarine "Dakar" sinks in the Mediterranean Sea, killing all 69 men on board.
Saturday, January 27th, 1968 - The French submarine "Minerve" sinks in the Mediterranean Sea, killing all 52 men on board.
Sunday, January 28th, 1968 - Golfer Bill Casper, 30, wins the 42nd annual L.A. Open to take the $20,000 first prize.
Monday, January 29th, 1968 - Little Brown Publishing releases the Gore Vidal novel "Myra Breckinridge", which tells the story of a Hollywood transvestite.
Tuesday, January 30th, 1968 - The military campaign known as the"Tet Offensive" is launched on the first day of the Vietnamese New Year (Tet), as Vietcong forces begin a series of surprise attacks on over 30 strategic centers in South Vietnam, including the American Embassy in Saigon. The Tet Offensive reveals North Vietnamese forces to be stronger than the Johnson administration had stated, thus undermining President Johnson's credibility and eroding American support for the war.
Wednesday, January 31st, 1968 - Former Vice-President Richard M. Nixon, 55, enters his name for the New Hampshire Presidential primary.
