Monday, July 1st, 1968 - The rock group The Band release their debut album "Music From Big Pink", which features one of their best-known songs, "The Weight".

 

Tuesday, July 2nd, 1968 - Thousands of Berkeley, California students stage a sit-in in front of city hall after the mayor declares a curfew against students.

 

Wednesday, July 3rd, 1968 - A report released by British Director of Famine Relief, Leslie Kirkley, states that at least 400 children are dying of starvation each day in the war-torn African country of Biafra.

 

Thursday, July 4th, 1968 - U.S. command in Saigon announce that U.S. combat deaths in the first six months of 1968 had exceeded those in all of 1967.

 

Friday, July 5th, 1968 - The rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival release their debut album "Creedence Clearwater Revival", which features the hit single "Suzie Q".

 

Saturday, July 6th, 1968 - For the third consecutive year, American tennis pro Billie Jean King captures the Wimbledon Women's Singles Tennis Championship, defeating Australia's Judith Tegart by a score of 9-7, 7-5.

 

Sunday, July 7th, 1968 - The rock group The Yardbirds perform their final concert in Bedfordshire, England before disbanding. To fulfill touring obligations, guitarist Jimmy Page puts together a new group by the name of "The New Yardbirds", but in October the group changes its name to "Led Zeppelin".
