Saturday, June 22nd, 1968 - The Jeff Beck Group, fronted by lead singer Rod Stewart, makes their U.S. debut at the Filmore East in New York.

 

Sunday, June 23rd, 1968 - A stampede at a soccer stadium in Bueno Aires, Argentina leaves 74 dead and 150 injured.

 

Monday, June 24th, 1968 - Washington, D.C. police close down "Resurrection City" an encampment of tents and shacks erected near the Washington Mall by the Poor People's Campaign (see May 12th) to draw attention to the plight of the impoverished. Police arrest 124 residents who refuse to leave.

 

Tuesday, June 25th, 1968 - Following the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy, President Lyndon Johnson urges Congress to pass legislation that would require national registration of every firearm as well as the licensing of every gun owner.

 

Wednesday, June 26th, 1968 - Pope Paul VI announces that bones discovered in 1953 during excavations under St. Peter's Basilica in Rome have been identified, to his satisfaction, as those of St. Peter.

 

Thursday, June 27th, 1968 - Czech dissident Ludvik Vaculik releases his manifesto "The Two Thousand Words", which openly criticizes Soviet domination of Czechoslovakia. Written during a period of political liberalization known as the Prague Spring, the manifesto fosters a growing anti-Soviet sentiment in Czechoslovakia. In late August the Soviets respond by invading the country.

 

Friday, June 28th, 1968 - United Artists releases the film "The Thomas Crown Affair", starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. The movie's opening song "The Windmills Of Your Mind" will win an Oscar for Best Song.

 

Saturday, June 29th, 1968 - Pink Floyd's second album "A Saucerful of Secrets" is released. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, it is the last Pink Floyd album that Syd Barrett would work on.

 

Sunday, June 30th, 1968 - Tammy Wynette's hit song "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" reaches #1 on the Country Music Singles Chart.
