Friday, March 22nd, 1968 - Three days after her 24th birthday, President Johnson's eldest daughter, Lynda Bird Johnson, is removed from a San Francisco cable car for eating an ice cream cone.
Saturday, March 23rd, 1968 - March Madness comes to an end as the UCLA Bruins defeat the North Carolina Tar Heels 78-55 to win their second straight NCAA College Basketball tournament in Los Angeles. UCLA's Lew Alcindor (who later became Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) gets the award for Most Outstanding Player.
Sunday, March 24th, 1968 - Golfer George Archer, 28, wins the Pensacola Florida Open, earning $16,000.
Monday, March 25th, 1968 - NBC airs its 58th and final episode of "The Monkees", which premiered on September 12th, 1966.
Tuesday, March 26th, 1968 - The "Yippies" apply to the Chicago Parks Department for a pemit to demonstrate at the Democratic National Convention in August. Their application is denied.
Wednesday, March 27th, 1968 - Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who on April 12th, 1961 became the first person to travel in space, dies in a low-level jet plane crash near Moscow.
Thursday, March 28th, 1968 - A protest march, led by Martin Luther King, Jr. in support of striking garbage collectors in Memphis, Tennessee, erupts in violence, resulting in the death of 16-year-old Larry Payne. It's the first time a march led by Dr. King ends in violence.
Friday, March 29th, 1968 - Israeli and Jordanian forces engage in a six-hour artillery duel along the Jordan River.
Saturday, March 30th, 1968 - Academy Award-winning child actor Bobby Driscoll, best known for his portrayal of Jim Hawkins in Walt Disney's 1950 version of "Treasure Island", dies at the age of 31, alone and penniless, in the East Village, Manhattan, from complications due to years of drug abuse.
Sunday, March 31st, 1968 - President Lyndon Johnson stuns the nation when, during a nationally televised address about the Vietnam War, he concludes his address by unexpectedly announcing: "I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President."
