Tuesday, October 8th, 1968 - U.S. forces in Vietnam launch "Operation Sealord", an attack on North Vietnamese supply lines and base areas.

 

Wednesday, October 9th, 1968 - French judge René Cassin is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in drafting the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

 

Thursday, October 10th, 1968 - The American League Detroit Tigers become the 1968 World Series Champions by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 in the 7th and deciding game of the series.

 

Friday, October 11th, 1968 - "Apollo 7", the first manned mission of the Apollo program, is launched with three astronauts on board for an eleven-day orbit of the earth.

 

Saturday, October 12th, 1968 - The 1968 Summer Olympics open in Mexico City with a record 4,750 men and 781 women representing 112 nations.

 

Sunday, October 13th, 1968 - The central African nation of Spanish Guinea gains its independence from Spain and becomes Equatorial Guinea.

 

Monday, October 14th, 1968 - The United States Department of Defense announces that the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marines will be sending 24,000 troops back to Vietnam for involuntary second tours.
