Sunday, September 1st, 1968 - A three-day meeting of the United Arab League opens in Cairo, Egypt.

 

Monday, September 2nd, 1968 - Jerry Lewis raises $1,401,876 as host of the third annual MDA (Muscual Dystrophy Asoociation) Labor Day telethon.

 

Tuesday, September 3rd, 1968 - With a 1-2 loss against the Washington Senators, the Chicago White Sox set an American League record of 39 losses by a single run.

 

Wednesday, September 4th, 1968 - In Libya, a new government is formed under Foreign Minister Waniis al-Geddafi, who succeeds Premier Abdul Hamid Bakkush.

 

Thursday, September 5th, 1968 - The National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence announces plans to investigate the disorders in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention.

 

Friday, September 6th, 1968 - The tiny country of Swaziland in southern Africa gains its independence from Great Britain.

 

Saturday, September 7th, 1968 - The first organized protest against the annual Miss America Pageant takes place outside the Atlantic City Convention Center in New Jersey, as about 100 feminists crown a live sheep as Miss America and throw symbols of ther oppression (including bras) into a "freedom ashcan". The New York Times mistakenly reports that the bras were burned, thus creating the derogatory term "bra-burning feminists". During the ceremony the crown was passed from Debra Barnes (Miss Kansas) to Judith Ford (Miss Illinois).
