Monday, September 16th, 1968 - Republican presidential candidate Richard M. Nixon appears on the NBC program "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" just long enough to say, "Sock it to me?"

 

Tuesday, September 17th, 1968 - The Detroit Tigers win their first American League pennant in 23 years with a 2-1 victory at home against the New York Yankees.

 

Wednesday, September 18th, 1968 - Following seven weeks of demonstrations and student unrest, federal troops occupy the National University in Mexico City.

 

Thursday, September 19th, 1968 - Chester Carlson, inventor of the photocopy machine, dies at the age of 62.

 

Friday, September 20th, 1968 - New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle hits his 536th (and final) career home run during a game against the Boston Red Sox. Less than six months later he retires from baseball at the age of 37.

 

Saturday, September 21st, 1968 - NBC premieres the police drama "Adam 12", starring Martin Milner and Kent McCord.
