Tuesday, September 8th, 1968 - Huey Newton, head of the Black Panther Party, is convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the killing of an Oakland policeman.

 

Monday, September 9th, 1968 - Responding to criticism that his police force was too heavy-handed in dealing with protestors during the recent Democratic National Convention, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley makes a slip of the tongue by saying: "The policeman isn't there to create disorder, the policeman is there to preserve disorder."

 

Tuesday, September 10th, 1968 - Guy Ritchie, British film director and former husband of pop singer Madonna, is born in Hetfordshire, England.

 

Wednesday, September 11th, 1968 - French General René Cogny and 94 others die when an Air France jetliner crashes into the Mediterranean.

 

Thursday, September 12th, 1968 - Representative Charles Goodell, 42, becomes the youngest Republican Senator ever when he is sworn in by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the June 5th assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

 

Friday, September 13th, 1968 - In protest of Russia's August 20th invasion of Czechoslovakia, Albania withdraws from the Warsaw Pact.

 

Saturday, September 14th, 1968 - Singer Roy Orbison's two sons, Roy DeWayne Orbison (age 10), and Anthony King Orbison (age 6) die in a house fire in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
